Sacred/to the memory of/H. WATSON spouse/to Lieut. W. McKAIN/Ross Militia who died/at Tain 2nd Decr 1817.

Well, I was just fiddling about one night looking for ancestors, and on the off chance I searched for McKain - hit the jackpot. This stone is for Henrietta Watson who was married to William McKain. He died in Edinburgh in the 1840s.

Henrietta Watson McKain
Miss Henrietta Watson in Fortrose was married to William McKain, then “a teacher in Rosemarky” in late 1797 in Rosemarkie.
William's parents were Donald McKain and Anne Reid, and he was born in May 1771 in Rosemarkie. By 1841, William had moved to London Row, Leith and was described as “Army Half Pay”. He was living with Mary McKain (second wife?) and Kennethina, a daughter. William died in Leith in February 1844 aged 73 (The Scotsman).

William and Henrietta had the following children :
Ann Born October 8th 1798, baptised the 10th at Rosemarkie.
Ann was unmarried and was housekeeper to her brother Donald (or Daniel). She died in Glasgow in January 1858.

Donald Born January 26th 1800, baptised the 31st at Rosemarkie . William was a “teacher in the Academy at Fortrose”.
Donald (or Daniel) as he was known, became Engineer to the Glasgow Water Works at Dalmarnock. He travelled to Portugal to advise on water supply to Oporto, and died unmarried in Glasgow on February 8th 1859. He is buried in the Glasgow Necropolis Cemetery.

Sophia Fowler Born August 24th 1801, baptised the 27th at Rosemarkie. Sophia married William Stuart, a clerk, in Newhaven (near Edinburgh)in 1826. They had 2(?) daughters.

Henereta Born 8th January 1804, baptised 10 January at Tain. William is described as “of the Ross Militia”, and the witnesses were John Barclay Esq of Mure Farm and Lt John Watson late of the Caithness Legion. She married in 1833 at Leith, Alexander Wallace Bruce, a bank clerk at Sir William Forbes of Pitsligo's bank in Edinburgh. She had 3 children, William, Christina and Henrietta, and died in 1871 in Glasgow.

Kennethina Born and baptised January 3rd 1806. She was baptised at the Tabernacle(Countess of Huntingdon), Norwich, England. She married in Glasgow in 1845, Archibald Cunningham, a farmer and tannery owner of Bonnington, near Edinburgh, and died in Glasgow in 1862. They had no children.

Robert Born c. 1808 in England. He was a wine merchant's clerk and traveller, and died unmarried in Glasgow in 1872.
