Donald Urquhart, ss. Thomas & Hugh, d. Sophia.

Erected/in loving memory/of/DONALD URQUHART/died 8 Feb. 1864, aged 55 years/and his children/THOMAS/died 20th Jan. 1864, aged 18 months/SOPHIA/died 3rd Jan. 1864, aged 5 years/and/HUGH/died 24th Oct. 1884, aged 32 years.

This is my great grandfather and his children. Sophia died on 3rd of January 1864. My Great Grandmother Catherine (MacKenzie) lost Sophia to Scarletina on 3 January 1864 then Thomas to the same thing on 20th January 1864 then her husband Donald died on the 8 February 1864. Her son Hugh 20 years later. My grandfather (her 3rd son)John Urquhart is buried somewhere nearby. (and possibly Catherine too)

Thank you so much for posting this information about your family Carole as I’ve always wondered what happened to cause so many deaths so quickly in one family each time I’ve visited Nigg cemetery and read their gravestone.

You are welcome June. I live in NZ so cant physically take care of the stone. Can any of the people who have authority for this now closed graveyard please tell me if there are any records kept somewhere which could shed light on the small headstone next to this larger one of my Great Grandfathers. Is it possible that that is my grandfather Johns grave? or even his mother Catherine McKenzie.
