Sacred/ to the memory of/ JOHN MACLEAN/ shoemaker in Avoch who dep/arted this life the 5th day of/ October 1869 aged 84 years/ also/ to the memory of/ MARGARET DOWNIE/ his spouse who departed this/ life the 15th day of January 1869/ aged 85 years.

Comments

The 1861 Census shows that John Maclean was born in Perth, Perthshire and Margaret in Rosemarkie, Ross and Cromarty. Margaret's death certificate shows that she was the daughter of Hugh Downie, Weaver, and Ann Downie, M.S. Downie. The couple married in Rosemarkie on 31 December 1815 and had a daughter Betsy born about 1832 in Avoch, according to the 1861 Census.
