Can anyone tell me what the text means and when this stone was erected ?
Alex Forbes died in 1858 and his daughter Margaret Hyndmarsh in 1894, Harry Ann died in 1925.
Foster Hindmarsh Davidson was my wife's grandfather.

Speculation on my part, Allen, that the stone would have been erected by Alexander Forbes while he was alive. But why is his death not included? The 'her' should refer to Margaret in both cases.

Thanks Roddie for your thoughts. It seems strange his death is not shown but his descendants deaths are. Perhaps someone has the answer.

I think Foster was Harry Ann's son rather than Margaret's.
Margaret Forbes' husband was Barnabas Hindmarsh (married 1832). Harry (Harriet) Ann Hindmarsh married Roderick Davidson in 1860.

Hello Fiona, you're correct about Foster. He was Harry Ann's son. The text on the stone is confusing and even more so as he was known in Australia as Foster John Hindmarsh Davidson. So why isn't the name John included? His mother was named Harry after her uncle Harry Forbes but she used the female form Harriet. We still wonder who erected the stone so any thoughts on that are appreciated.

This interests me because I have an ancestor Joseph Hindmarsh who married Margaret Forbes who in the 1841 census are living in St. Johns Parish, Low Fell, Gateshead. Margaret was born in Cromarty, Scotland. My grandfather was Ernest Forbes Hindmarsh who married Florence Watson

Hello Janet, as you can see its; quite some time since there were any queries about the Forbes stone.
I can't locate another Margaret Forbes in my records . Perhaps if you have her birthdate it would help to find her on parish records. We are still no wiser as to the meaning of the text. Glad to receive any additional information on the family.
