William & Marg't (Russell), Eliz'h (Grant) Forsyth


In memory of/WILLIAM FORSYTH/son of JAMES FORSYTH a native of/Morayshire, who settled in Cromarty/about 1700, and died there in 1739/He was born in 1722, died there in 1800/ His virtues are recorded in the memoirs/of his life by/HUGH MILLER./He was twice married first in 1752 to/MARGARET RUSSELL/who died in childbirth in 1753/and secondly in 1764 to/ELIZABETH GRANT/born 1742-died 1808/whose remains rest here with those/of her husband and their five children/whom they suvived.



This stone is erected  in 1888/by his great grandson/WILLIAM MACANDREW/of Westwood House, Little Horkesley, essex/to perpetuate the memory of a good man.

I think there needs to be an examination of the text here. I believe Wm died Jan 30, 1800 as noted in the National Biography by Hugh Miller. Also the dates must be wrong for Elizabeth otherwise she would be 120 years old. Has there been any attempt to decipher the actual text of the stone?
