The date of death was 3 October 1811 - MDCCCXI - (confirmed by his entry in Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticianae). He was the father of Captain George Downie, killed on 4 October 1814 on HMS Confiance while leading the British fleet in the Battle of Plattsburg in the USA. John's parentage was not known to the compiler of his Fasti entry and I have not found it either, though his entry in the roll of Alumni of the University of Aberdeen (1748-52) shows that he was from Aberdeen or Aberdeenshire: "Aberdonensis" and the Fasti entry gives his birthplace as Aberdeen. He was Minister of Gairloch and then Stornoway before Urray. His son Alexander was Minister of Lochalsh (his gravestone is also on this website) and Alexander's son Charles was Minister of Contin (the gravestone of his wife and children is also on this website).
