I believe David Mustard (son of Alexander Mustard & Ann Munro) was born in 1782 and he died 13 Mar 1849 (age 67). I do not have dates for Margaret Hossack but she could not have died in 1807 as her son David, who is also interred here was born in 1827 according to the transcription. Perhaps, if she was 44, she died in 1827? These stones are so difficult to read but really appreciate seeing the Mustard family graves on this website.

Lisa, I've been up close and personal to this stone this morning. The dates I've transcribed look correct......the only doubt is David jnr death, as another survey has this as 1894 and it could possibly be that, though it looks more clearly to be 1891.

I did miss out a line which may or may not be significant...after "of the above" should be "David Mustard".

David jun's death certificate should clarify the mystery.

Thank you for looking again Roddie. I'm not very familiar with these Mustards but, checking today, it does appear that David Mustard Sr. married an Isabel Gregor in 1808 so David Mustard Jr. was probably her son. He appears in the 1841 Census, b. about 1826 with Isabella, his mother. So David Mustard was the son of David Mustard but probably not of deceased Margaret Hossack, hence the "son of the above/ David Mustard." That makes sense. It also looks like David Mustard Sr. was dead before 1841 so my information about his death must be incorrect, although his christening is recorded in the parish records as taking place in 13 Aug 1784 which doesn't match with the age mentioned here for death. Mysterious.

David Mustard was born 13 Aug 1784, Meikle Farness, Married 14 Jan 1808 in Rosemarkie to Isobel "Tibby" Gregor, who was born abt 1785 Cromarty, no death date for her. Children: Donald born 9 Apr 1810, James b: 27 Mar 1811, Isobel b: 22 Sep 1814, Ann b: 17 May 1819, and David b: 18 Dec 1822. David Sr. is my 1st cousin, 4 times removed. David Sr. died 13 march 1849, Kincurdy.

David Sr. had two wives, first being Margaret Hossach(k), then Isobel Gregor. Isobel was David Jr.'s mother.

David Jr. married Mary Ann Casler in Ontario Canada. I have 11 children by them in Canada. David Jr. died in Ontario, Canada, but no date on him.

Roddie: Thanks for all of your work. I am in awe of it! We were over there three years ago, and just did not have time to do that much. We spent four days on the Black Isle, and it was much too short. We looked for Marey Mustard in the Old Gaelic cemetery, and did not find her, and you did! Thanks so much. We hope to come back.

I do have two extra David Mustard's, first born abt 1827 Rosemarkie, and died 21 Jul 1891, Rosemarkie, that I cannot account for, so there may be confused sons here. I have no parents here.

I have another David, born abt 1762 Ross-shire, and died 12 Mar 1829, with no parents listed either.

So that should muddle things up a bit. I question David Sr. birth date, as 1784, if he married Margaret Hossack, and they were supposed to have had two sons, William and Robert. She would have been 21 years older than the aforementioned David Mustard Sr. b: 1784. She perhaps was the wife of the David born in 1762 that I cannot account for.

Thanks John. I clearly jumped to conclusions about this being the grave of David Mustard, b. 1784, your ancestor. Obviously the two "unparented" Davids you mentioned have to be buried here -- the dates match so well. So your David couldn't have been married to Margaret Hossack first. It was this other David b. 1862 who married her. He probably remarried after she died and had the David Jr.(b. 1827) near the end of his life. These gravestones are great for fitting puzzle pieces together. So now we have an unattached David who married Margaret Hossach and had sons William and Robert with her. Like John, I am descended from Hugh Mustard, b. 1710 in Rosemarkie, my 5th great grandfather.
