Tha an cuimhneachan so/air a chuir suas/air an uaighaige/le feura/de a luachd duthcha/agus muinntir eile/le uachdran gaoimh neil/agus eire achdail/Ghearrloch/air an ceann/am an teisteanas/air an speis dha/aus am mor mheas/air a chial neo-chumant/1850.


Air ainm-sa cho fada bithidh/air heis/saig a bhardachd Ghaelic bhi/-theas gairid.


 


In memory/of/WILLIAM ROSS/sometime schoolmaster/of Gairloch/better known as/the/Gairloch bard/who died in 1790/aged 28 years.


This monument/is erected/over his grave/by a few/of his countrymen/and others/headed by the amiable/and accomplished propretor/of Gairloch/in testament of/their respect/and admiration of his/extraordinary genius/and/great native talent/1850.


His name to future ages shall/descend/while Gaelic poetry can claim/a friend.

William Ross is celebrated in 'History of Skye' by Alexander Nicolson (1930). According to Nicolson, he was born in 1762 at Sithean, near Broadford, Skye. He died in Gairloch, the land of his mother's family, where he was the parish schoolmaster.
