I have been doing some research into this lady, whom I believe to be the Marchioness' personal ladies maid. There has been a belief that she was Ann Gordon, daughter of Lt William Gordon, and Elizabeth Matheison. they lived at Avoch cottage. But her birth date was 8 Mar 1832. Do you know this Ann Gordon's parents? I can't find a death record for an Ann Gordon 8 Nov 1883 - any thoughts?

Hi Roddie - yes it does, but this lady is married, and was not born on the date given. The difficulty is finding her employer, the Marchioness (so-called) in all of the census. I have found Julia and Ann Gordon in one census together, that of 1861, when Julia was 15, and probably just given her own personal maid. But after that she is hard to find (she married three times). Errecting a gravestone for a maid who was with you for only a few years seems a bit unusual - there is obviously more to this story! cheers, Louise
