Bethune, M J Private 19710 02/07/1916 35 Royal Scots United Kingdom c. 11. Meaulte military cemetery

Roddie that date was the opening date of the Somme battle 20, 000 killed that morning, could Spain be read as Somme (strange place to be Spain) or does it read France

Vernon, must have been sure it was Spain...now not so sure! Will check and get back.

Murdo John is a relative of my husband's family and yes it is the Somme. He was born about 1881 and was killed in action aged 35.

Yes, it definitely says (and is) France. Murdo John, my grandfather's younger brother, was born at Easter Urray Farm, Muir of Ord on 27 Sept 1880, and was a piper in the 16th Royal Scots (McCrae's Battalion). He died of wounds at the Somme on 2 July 1916 and is buried in Meaulte military cemetery. His name appears on the war memorial in Culbokie school (the plaque has now been transferred to the new school), and also on the war memorial in Conon Bridge. Jack Alexander's excellent book about the 16th Royal Scots includes a reference to Murdo John. He left a young widow and two sons.
