Comments

At the 1871 census, before James's marriage, when he was still at Strathconon, his 6 year old nephew, William J. Watson was living in his home. William also lived for some time with the family in Boath, receiving his early education from James. William was later Rector of the Royal Academy, Inverness, then of the Royal High School, Edinburgh, and finally professor of Celtic at Edinburgh University, 1914-1938. His publications include "Place names of Ross & Cromarty". It was he who registered James's death. Flora is mentioned on p.56 of "The MacLeans of Boreray" by H.H.Mackenzie (Inverness, 1946), her grandmother being a Flora MacLean descended from Lachlan Bronnach MacLean 7th chief. Mackenzie mistakenly gives James's name as William.
