Erected/in memory of/JAMES MACKENZIE/late teacher at Houghton/le Spring, Durham/who died July the 12th 1855/aged 18 years.

James was my 3xgreat uncle. His parents were Thomas and Barbara Mackenzie, who are buried in the adjacent 'table' grave. James was born in 1837 at Cononside, Ferintosh. He died of TB at the age of 18 (not 48) in 1855. James was a teacher in County Durham and it was his older brother Charles, my 2xgreat grandfather and also a teacher in County Durham, who brought his body back to Scotland.
