In memory/of/DONALD FINLAYSON/late of New South Wales/who died suddenly/at Tarvie/on the 8th August 1883/aged 73 years.

I am Alan Caradus and his son Roderick was my Great Grandfather. I have never known what happened to him, and can only guess he had returned to visit Scotland and because he died suddenly had to buried in Scotland. His wife, Hannah, who died in 1881 is buried in Kilcoy cemetry in northern NSW near Armidale.

my son just e-mailed me this - fantastic. My aunty Nita Finlayson from Moore did a lot of research on the family before she died. At a clan gathering in Armidale we were delighted to actually read into the family history from an old bible as to the reasons for moving to australia which i had always wondered.
i guess its easy when there is no choice!

ok so Donald is my great great great grandfather. He and Hanna came to Australia on the 2.11.1858 on the "White Star" sailing from Liverpool via Melbourne to Sydney. His son John (brother of Roderick) married Margaret Ferguson and had three children. John is my great great grandfather!
Donald and Hanna had 7 children Alexander, John, Roderick, John, Kenneth, Hector and Daniel. Alexander and the first John did not come with the family to Australia. The family settled at Coningdale and Pointsfield near Rockvale, Armidale District.
