Hiya Roddie,
www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=222910 has another pic of this stone, including a line that was buried in the sod when you took your photo;
"aged 52 years"
which agrees with a transcription about 1912 by a descendant.

He later had an apprenticeship in the south learning modern farming methods, however in 1767 he and his Widowed mother lost tack of Achiltibuie and were moved to the more remote and desolate farm of Dalpolly. See the stone of Daniel Mackenzie in Badenscallie burial ground who took Achiltibuie on this website (enter 601 in Search Box).
At some point he became Tacksman of Achnaclerach, and his death variously ascribed to a footpad near Garve, or a duel. It is thought his wife was sister of the father of the explorer, Sir Alexander Mackenzie (see Image No. 1381).
Alex of Achnaclerach had nine or ten children, four of them noted furtraders in North America. See file on the Mackenzie of Achiltibuie family at the Coigach genealogy website noted in the links section of this site.
