War Graves Photographic Project note: Geoffrey John Alastair Mitchell (HMS Merganser), son of Mr & Mrs John Mitchell, Erdington, Birmingham. husband of Maxine E. Mtchell.

I was so pleased to find this picture. He was my uncle and I have been trying to find information about his flying accident in June 1945. It seems he was one of several Barracuda pilots killed at or near Rattray Air Station around this time. I havent found any accident reports. He seems to have been written out of history.

Shortly after my previous note I found Iain Crosbie on a Cromarty Archive. He had
joined 817 Sqn. as a new Pilot. Whilst he and five other crews were doing dive bombing training over Nigg bay, a wing came off the Barracuda ahead of him and it fell into the sea. Geoffrey was retraining for war in the far east after VE day.
