Ann Finlayson died at Munlochy, Knockbain, on 25 January 1855 aged 65; Roderick and Kenneth were two of her sons.

Does this stone include Anne's father Kenneth Finlayson of Achmore, 1751-1825? Or does he havehis own grave here? He was allegedly buried in Munlochy but I checked the Find A Grave site for Suddie Burial Ground near Munlochy and he was not indexed there.

I don't know the answer, James. I suspect there is no record of his burial given the time he would have died. I won't tell you what I think of FindaGrave.

I don't know about Anne's father but there's a memorial to her mother put up by her brothers, Duncan and Nicol Finlayson, who did well working for the Hudson's Bay Company. Kirkton of Lochalsh M.I. 19: Sacred to the memory of Ann McKenzie wife of Kenneth Finlayson late Tacksman of Achmore, who departed this life on the 20th Feb. 1809, and their son the Rev Rodk Finlayson who departed this life on 4th May 1811: a token of filial affection and respect is erected by D & N Finlayson H. Bay Co. There's a photo of the stone on deceasedonline but much of the inscription is hidden by brambles and moss.

Has anyone ever attempted to remove some of the moss and growth on the flat headstone to get a better take on what is inscribed?

It turns out that yes, indeed the father, Kenneth Finlayson, born 1750 and died 1825 at Munlochy is buried below with his daughter Anne and her husband Hector and one of their sons Roderick. I got the info from Pam Gaudio (A descendant of Kenneth's grandson Roderick Finlayson of the HBC) who sent me some info from Moira McKinnon, another descendant of this Finlayson branch.

Hi James, it was Pam Gaudio who got me involved with the Finlaysons.

Pat, yes she mentioned you several times. Pam and I have been in touch on and off for about 20 years but I finally met her in Vancouver in 2019.I descend from Nicol Finlayson of the HBC, 1794-1877, s/o Kenneth Finlayson 1850-1825 (he's buried under this flat headstone with his daughter Anne MacKenzie Finlayson-McKenzie) and Anne MacKenzie (she is buried at Kirkton Churchyard Cemetery, Lochalsh with her son Rev. Roderick Finlayson). I'm a descendant of Nicol and his first Native partner Nancy Ka-na-ka-shi-waite (Cree) through their son John Finlayson 1823-1898 and his Ojibway wife Angelique Ikwens Shebagijig. After COVID I recently picked up the researching the Scottish branch once again to sort out loose ends and see if once and for all it would be possible to narrow down the locations of these burials. Still cannot find Nicol or his brother Duncan's OPR baptisms though. Nor could we find their sister Anne MacKenzie Finlayson's (1790-1855) baptism in the OPRs. Its very odd, this gap of register entries for Kenneth's children Anne, Nicol and Duncan between 1790-1797, then Kenneth appears again with the baptism of his son Donald in 1801 and a daughter Mary Margaret in 1803.Kenneth's wife died at Munlochy in 1809 and the father Kenneth moved from Loachalsh area to Munlochy to live with his daughter Anne and her husband Hector McKenzie (1749-1814) and died there in 1825. Apparently Anne was a fairly wealthy widow and took care of her brother Nicol Finlayson's three children from Canada, Kenneth, Roderick and Mary. Mary eventually married James Dunbar Lamb and lived in Nairn. These were the children of Nicol and his legal wife Elizabeth Kennedy, herself a Métis Cree daughter of HBC Chief Factor Alexander Kennedy. So the search continues, thanks.
