Sacred/to the memory/of/Mrs FLORA C MACKENZIE/wife of Rev. C. DOWNIE/Minister of this Parish/who died 18 March 1846/aged 41 years/also in memory of/ALEXANDER/son of the Rev. C DOWNIE/and Mrs FLORA C MACKENZIE/who was called home by his/heavenly Father/on the 5th March 1846/in the tenth year of his life/"Them also which sleep in Jesus/will God bring with him"/and in memory of/their daughter/JANE CATHERINE MACKENZIE/who died 16th April 1848/aged 16 years/and JANET MACKENZIE/who died 19th May 1856/aged 22 years.

Comments

Flora MacKenzie was the wife of Reverend Charles Downie, Minister at Contin from 21st December 1825 to his death on 11th January 1852 aged 47 years. Reverend Downie was replaced by Reverend Colin MacKenzie on 24th April 1852.

Rev. Charles Downie was the son of Rev. Alexander Downie, Minister of Lochalsh (stone 8703) and the grandson of Rev. John Downie, Minister of Lochalsh, Stornoway and Urray (stone 152). Flora Mackenzie was the daughter of Kenneth Mackenzie of Inverinate and Anne Mackenzie, daughter of Thomas Mackenzie of Highgate and Applecross.

Charles and Flora had three other children: Anne, Charlotte (married Alexander Mackenzie) and Kenneth Mackenzie (Surgeon Lieutenant Colonel, Indian Medical Service, Bengal).
